Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple

Kannur is a coastal city in the south Indian state of Kerala. It was once an ancient trading port. Kannur derived its name from the location of district headquarters at Kannur town. In the olden days it was called as ‘Cannanore’, the anglicised form of Kannur.

St. Angelo Fort

St. Angelo Fort is also known as "Kannur For"t or "Kannur Kotta" is a fort facing the Arabian Sea, situated in Kannur district of Kerala.This fort is a massive triangular laterite fort and is among the most historic sites. This fort was built by the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, Dom Francisco De Almeida in 1505 AD. The fort has various cells, each cell has a single hole that was used for giving food to the prisoners. Besides, one can also see a restored chapel, gravestones of soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the fort along with gigantic bastions inside the fort complex.

Arakkalkettu is the royal palace of the Arakkal Ali Rajas and Beebis, the erstwhile Muslim rulers of Kannur. The museum is actually a section of the Arakkalkettu. The durbar hall section of the palace has been converted into a museum by the Government of Kerala. The museum exhibits artefacts and heirlooms of the royal family which includes the family seal, the pathayam, document box and so on. The royal copies of the Holy Quran, an old-fashioned telephone, swords and daggers used by the rulers, and a telescope are also on display.

Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple is a famous temple, located on the bank of the Valapattanam River, near Thalipparambu in the district of Kannur. This temple is also known as "Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan temple". One of the interesting facts is that, here dogs are considered to be sacred as it’s the vehicle of Lord Muthappan. One of the most sacred pilgrimsites in north Kerala. The deity worshiped in this temple is Sree Muthappan, a personification of two Gods – Thiruvappana (Lord Vishnu) and Vellatom (Lord Shiva), who is said to have fought for the cause of the down trodden and forsaken his entire life. His life is best portrayed through a traditional dance known as "Muthappan Theyyam". There are no restrictions, no dress regulations and any body can go up to the sanctum-sanctorum and pray.

The Kannur Lighthouse is located near the Payyambalam Beach in Kannur district. It is adjacent to the Sea View Park and the Government Guest House. The lighthouse is still active and overlooks the Arabian Sea. This lighthouse is the Kerala's first lighthouse. Standing tall at the height of 75 feet, this lighthouse was first built in the early months of 1903. This Lighthouse has a balcony with a light that is lit as the evening breaks in to alert the seamen of the land.

Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya temple is located at Mundallur in Kannur. This temple is dedicated to Lord Subramanya in Peralassery is unique for its architecture and associated legends. The temple traces its origin to the Thretha Yuga. As per the Ramayana, Lord Sree Rama along with Lakshmana and Hanuman, on their way to Lanka in search of Sita (consort of Sree Rama), reached this place and felt the presence of Lord Subramanya. On approval from Lord Ayyappa, Sree Rama decided to consecrate the idol of Lord Subramanya in this place. Famous for snake worship, hen’s eggs are the main offerings in the temple. The temple pond is a source of wonder for all devotees. This rectangular pond has an impressive architecture with countless steps leading into the pool from all the four sides. The local belief is that on the day of Thulam Sankramam, water from the Cauvery will reach the well of temple pond.

The Rajarajeshwara temple is a Shiva temple located at Taliparamba in Kannur. The temple is regarded as one of the existing 108 ancient Shiva Temples of ancient Kerala. The Rajarajeshwara temple has a top of about 90 tonnes. If any problem is encountered in the other temples of South India, devotees seek a solution in this temple through a prashnam, a traditional method of astrological decision making. Several centuries ago, it was renovated by the Mushika (Kolathiri) dynasty kings. This temple was rebuilt into its present form in the early eleventh century. The quadrangular sanctum has a two-tiered pyramidal roof; in front of the sanctum is the namaskara mandapam, but the temple has no kodi maram (flagstaff), unlike others in Kerala. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be several thousands of years old.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is the northernmost wildlife sanctuary of Kerala. Its located on the western slope of the Western Ghats and Spread over a 55 sq. km area of semi-evergreen forests. It was established in 1984. The forest is peaceful and many trekking options are available. One can catch sight of herds of elephants, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, Nilgiri Langur, Hanuman Langur and the Malabar Giant Squirrel.

Ezhimala (ezhu means seven and mala means mountain in Malayalam) is a seven-peaked mountain, a hill reaching a height of 286 metres, is located near Payyanur in Kannur. It is a part of a conspicuous and isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory. The set up is unique with 300M high ezhimala hill on the background. Carved stone pillars and an ancient burial chamber can be seen at the foot of the hills. The hills are well known for their rare medicinal herbs.
