Sunder Singh was born a Sikh at a village in Ludhiana district. He converted to Christianity while a teenager. He spent a major portion of his life giving shelter to lepers and travelling far and wide urging people to convert to Christianity. He died in 1929. These missionaries were part of a larger movement, the Christian Ashram movement which married vedantic teachings with those of Christianity and took on the form of Hindu religious practices, making them practically indistinguishable from local Hinduism while owing ultimate allegiance to Christianity. The Christukula Ashram movement was started by two medical missionaries, Ernest Forrester Paton (1891–1970) and S Jesudasan. Paton was a Scot who came to India under the aegis fo the Scottish United Free Church medical mission. He adopted the Tamil name Chinnannan. Along with a fellow missionary and Tamil convert S Jesudasan he founded the Christukula Ashram, the first Protestant Christian Ashram in India in 1920 having taken inspiration from the missionary from Punjab who preferred to use the title 'Sadhu' for himself, Sadhu Sunder Singh.
