Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India.
Before 1964, Dhanushkodi was a busy, crowded city. The Dhanushkodi beach attracted thousands of tourists each day. In 1964, Dhanushkodi was hit by a big #cyclone and was almost destroyed by it. It is considered a Ghost town, as the place became uninhabitable. The 1964 cyclone had a bigger impact, at least 1,500-2,000 people in coastal areas died. People’s President Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam National Memorial is situated at Peikarumbu in Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi Road.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born and brought up in Rameswaram and became a scientist and worked for DRDO and ISRO. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is the World famous Indian scientist who played a leading role in India’s missile programs. He was also elected as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was laid to rest at this place after his sudden demise on July 27, 2015. After that this memorial constructed and On 22 July 2017, on the occasion of Kalm's second anniversary, the memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in July 2017
There are four halls inside this memorial. Abdul Kalam's office room setting, portrait painting, wax statue of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and a photograph of his work, life and social life. Dr. APJ's metamorphosis can be seen from Abdul Kalam, the youngest to the proud President of India. It covers Dr. Kalam's life span, his achievements and awards. At the back of the memorial, there is a Rocket Missile statue and a bronze statue of Dr. Abdul Kalam.
