Pateeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Perur, in Coimbatore. The temple was built by Karikala chola in 2nd century CE. Thus making this one of the oldest temple in the state and even India. During the rule of Raja Raja Chola I, 'Artha Mahal' and 'Maha Mahal' were constructed. After that temple was maintained, new mahals constructed by Hoysala kings, Vijayanagara empire and Nayakars.
Lord Nataraja generically appears in all temples in an active dance posture. The uniqueness in this temple is that He appears in "Kanaga Sabhai" with legs downwards showing the end of his performance.
Miracle happening around this temple:
1) The Seeds of the Tamarind Tree in the Temple do not germinate,grow.
2) The refuse of animals do not decay or infested with worms.
3) People while dying, have their right leg up.
4) Young Palm Tree.
5) Bones of the dead are let off in the River Noyyal and after a couple of days,stones are found in lieu.
History of Pateeswarar Temple:
The Sacred cow "Kamadhenu" wished to become do work as Bramha. For that cow did penance near the ant hill. Suyambu Linga shiva was hidden inside of ant hill. The Calf kicked by foot and horn in playing time. Kamadhenu asked shiva to forgive him. Lord shiva appeared and said i pleased by calf. The Female calf name is "Patti". Afterthat day onwards calf did worshipped to shiva linga. That is why this lord shiva called as "Pateeswarar"
The foot print scar of god cow is visible on the head of Shivalinga in this temple.
The monumental temple is capable of spiritual freedom to devotees by bestowing “Moksha”.
